Swimming pools are great for getting exercise, for staying cool amidst the heat, and for giving you a sense of overall relaxation. But when there’s a global pandemic going on, it’s a different story.
In light of the pandemic, you may be looking for ways to resume activities as safely as possible. How can we enjoy pool time while maintaining health and safety?
What Do Experts Say About Swimming in Pools During a Pandemic?
Center for Disease and Control and Prevention (CDC) says that while the coronavirus can spread through prolonged exposure to infected respiratory droplets and surfaces, there’s no evidence that the virus can survive in pools. Chlorine, a chemical added to swimming pools, also disinfects bacteria, algae, dirt and chloramines potentially present in the water.
But just like all other activities, there is no way to ensure zero risks of infection, so we should all take extra caution should we decide to go. It is possible to enjoy swimming in the pool by taking these steps to actively mitigate the risks of spreading COVID-19 by following this simple guide.
Go for Outdoor Pools
Viruses tend to circulate more in enclosed spaces, that’s why it is recommended to swim in outdoor pools. Ventilation is better in wide-open spaces, thus reducing the risk of contracting a virus.
Pre-book Your Visit
The only risk for pools is when entry is uncontrolled and people start to flock in the water. Make sure to call ahead to inquire about the pool’s availability and how many people will be catered to during your visit. Also, contact the management to know more about their preventive actions and policies regarding pool use.
Practice Physical Distancing
Physical distancing is a must. It is crucial to keep your distance from people who are not from your immediate household. Pool markers may be present to remind pool-goers about physical distancing.
Bring Your Own Swimming Gear
When going out for a swim, bring your own goggles, snorkels, or floaters. Avoid sharing your belongings to reduce the risk of virus transmission. Wipe the surfaces or wash these items before and after use.
Wash Your Hands and Sanitize
Handwashing is still the best way to prevent the spread of illnesses. Before and after touching things, wash your hands frequently. Bring a hand sanitizer with you.
And lastly, don’t forget to wear a mask when not in the water!
*If you have comorbidities, are pregnant, or have existing health risks, it is strongly advised to avoid swimming pools for now. Children below 18 years old must be accompanied by their parents.
